The community of Okotoks now has access to recently launched overdose response app.

The Digital Overdose Response System (DORS) is a mobile app created to help individuals who use opioids and other substances alone at home.

It was first launched in Calgary this summer and expanded to Edmonton on Oct. 7.

The app can now be used in areas surrounding Calgary, including Okotoks, Cochrane, Airdrie, Strathmore, Balzac, and Chestermere.

Mike Ellis, the associate minister of mental health and addictions, says a majority of opioid-related deaths occur while a person's at home.

"More than 70 per cent of opioid-related fatalities happen at home. The Digital Overdose Response System will help prevent fatalities for people who are using opioids at home alone. DORS will also connect people with addiction to resources to begin their pursuit of recovery and well-being."

If someone is unresponsive to a timer when using the DORS app, the STARS emergency centre will call them.

In the case of a suspected overdose, emergency medical services will immediately be sent to the person's location.

The app only collects a person's phone number and location, and all information is kept confidential.

STARS only initiates contact if they suspect a medical emergency.

The DORS app is available for free from any app store or through DORSApp.ca.
