The Town of High River is going to make it a lot more safe for pedestrians crossing the street in front of the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex.

Town Engineering Administrative Assistant Jennifer Hogan says installation is set to begin on pedestrian crossing lights in the coming weeks.

"At 12 Avenue S.E. and 3 Street S.E. in front of the Rec-Plex will be full signalization in the future. We want to have a full set of stop lights there. The project this year to put the pedestrian crossing in will allow for that to happen down the road."

She says they're waiting for a pole for the new base of the light standard and adds it should be ready for pick up this week in Edmonton.

She says that barring any unforeseen problems, once the pole is picked up, crews will be back and complete the project within a day.

"We've had several complaints. It's hard to see people crossing the road, so we need something visual there to prompt people to slow down when people cross the road."

She says even though the Town wants a full set of traffic lights there in the future this addresses safety concerns right now.

"We wanted to make sure our pedestrians were safe crossing that road, either going to the Rec-Plex or to some of the schools in that area as well."

She says not to worry, there won't be any road closures or detours, but does say there is a possibility of a lane reduction for the duration of the project.

Hogan says the Town budgeted $42,000 for the pedestrian crossing.
