The Liberal's proposed tax changes have caused quite a stir in the agricultural community.

Steven Muth, Accountant and Partner of Muth & Co LLP, says the biggest issue will be how the proposed changes are interpreted by a judge or tax department.

"There are many, many potential technical changes that will impact farmers. The legislation as drafted does not specifically mention agriculture to my understanding, at least the way I've read it. But, the wording of the legislation definitely can be used to capture and significantly alter the transition of agricultural businesses, and the exiting from agricultural businesses."

Muth says, the way the legislation is written, a farmer who wishes to keep the farm in the family, may be exposed to more tax than if they did the same process today, or sold the farm to a third party.

"They say that these rules are fair. Absolutely not are these rules fair. They have made things more unfair depending on the final implementation. So, we need to keep the lobbying up on the government, we need to keep the pressure on the Liberal Party to get these rules clarified from an agricultural stand point."

The tax changes will be high priority at talks this week between the Federal and Provincial Governments.
