Canadian Beef Industry Reduces Water Footprint

A recent study shows the amount of water required to produce 1 kilogram of Canadian beef has decreased 17 per cent from 1981 to 2011.

One of the major reasons was an increase in carcass size over the 30 year period.

Another reason is the improvements in irrigation, which contributes to the amount of water used when producing the animal's feed.

 

Farmers and Shippers Waiting on Senate Approval

In a release, The Alberta Wheat Commission says, farmers in Western Canada are seeing a delay in the movement of this year's crop.

Bill C-49, also known as the Transportation Modernization Act, contains provisions which will ensure long term solutions to grain transportation problems, but it has not be approved by the Senate.

Chair of the Alberta Wheat Commission, Kevin Auch, says their approval has been delayed to the new year.

The Commission says, for the past several weeks, car order fulfillment by CN rail has averaged only 50 to 60 percent.

Alberta Barley Elections

Alberta Barley's Board of Directors has re-elected Region 3 Director Jason Lenz as their Chair, and Region 1 Director, Dave Bishop, as Vice Chair.

The elections took place at their Annual General Meeting held on December 6.
