TB Investigations starting to Wrap Up

On-farm testing is starting to wind down from the September 2016 case of bovine tuberculosis.

An Alberta cow tested positive in the U.S. system leading to a full investigation, which included a number of operations in Alberta as well as Saskatchewan.

Dr. Rick James-Davies with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, says the final round of testing of trace-in herds is underway.

"We think we will be done the heavy lifting on the investigation before the end of the year, and then really what we'll see is a final analysis of all that data, and CFIA, on behalf of Canadians, will publish a final report that goes to our trading partners and the World Organization for Animal Health that reaffirms that indeed Canada is a country free of tuberculosis."

So far, about 26,000 animals have been released from quarantine, approximately 11,500 animals have been destroyed that were associated with the infected, co-mingled, trace-out and trace-in herds with compensation paid to the owners.
