A Food Policy for Canada

The Federal Government is moving forward with the development of a Food Policy for Canada, which will incorporate the social, environmental and economic aspects of the food system into an integrated policy framework.

As a result, an alliance of more than 50 food industry, civil society, and farming groups is calling on the Government to create a National Food Policy Council.

Earlier this month, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food released a report in which it recommended that the government create a permanent Advisory Council consisting of multiple stakeholders.

Reflecting on 2017 for Agriculture

A key issue for farmers in 2017 was the Federal Governments proposed small business tax changes.

Farmers and farm groups spoke out against changes that would have had a major impact on their operations.

Finance Minister Morneau then changed the tax change proposal relating to issues around intergenerational transfers, passive investment and income sprinkling.

Farm groups seemed satisfied their concerns were addressed, but say they'll have to wait and see what is in the final plan.
