Labour Shortage in the Beef Industry

The Canadian Cattlemen's Association (CCA) says, a shortage of workers at the farm and beef processing levels remains a challenge for Canada's beef industry.

They say, according to the Conference Board of Canada, $141 million in annual farm cash receipts are lost due to job vacancies at the primary production level.

Employers have reached out to aboriganal groups, young people, and women across Canada, but some positions still go unfilled.

The CCA says, the agriculture industry's next alternative is to rely on immigration to fill these positions when Canadians are unavailable.

A New Addition to the U of A Research Ranch

A new gift arrived at the University of Alberta Kinsella Ranch last week, courtesy of Senator Dan Hays.

They received 78 Hays Converter cattle, which is a unique research breed for Alberta.

The breed is a cross between Hereford, Brown Swiss, and Holstein cattle.

Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at U of A, Dr. Stanford Blade, says the gift will allow them to figure out how they can manage some of those traits more effectively.
