Dairy and Chicken Farmers Frustrated with Trade Agreement

Associate Ag Critic, John Barlow, says Canada's dairy and poultry farmers are frustrated with the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Barlow says, it appears the Liberals have given up additional market access to TPP partners for Canadian supply managed sectors.

He says, the agreement no longer includes the United States, meaning they should've reduced market access, not increased it.

Barlow says, the trade agreement has been signed in principle, and it is unlikely this part of the deal will be opened for renegotiation.

Predicted Increase in Canola Acres

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is predicting a one million acre increase in canola acres across Canada this upcoming year.

That would put acres at a record 24 million.

AAFC is also calling for large canola ending stocks of 2 million tonnes for the current year versus 1.3 million tonnes that were carried forward from last year.

 

Investments for Canada's Organic Sector

On Friday, Federal Ag Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, announced multiple investments in support of Canada's organic industry.

The government will provide the Canadian General Standards Board the necessary funds to cover costs associated with the 2020 Canadian organic standards review.

MacAulay also announced $72,500 for the Canadian Organic Growers for the development of a user friendly guide to the Canadian organic standards.

As well, the Canada Organic Trade Association has received an additional $95,000 through the agri-marketing program, towards their international market development strategy.
