Indian Government Raises Import Tariff on Chickpeas Again

The Indian Government has once again raised the import tariff on chickpeas.

The 40 per cent tariff is now 60 per cent.

Last December, India imposed a 30 per cent tariff on chickpeas and lentils, and on February 7, they increased the tariff for the first time to 40 per cent.

The move was made to support Indian farmers who faced lower commodity prices.

Farm Groups Address Grain Transportation Concerns

Farm Leaders from across Canada held a news conference on Parliament Hill last week to highlight the troubles farmers are facing with delays in grain transportation.

Producers are facing cash flow concerns, with grain shipments stalled due to poor rail service.

Farm groups are calling on the federal government to expedite amendments to Bill C-49, the Transportation Modernization Act, and pass the legislation as soon as possible.

Canadian Pork Producers in Japan This Week

The Canadian Pork Council will take part in a trade mission to Japan this week.

The trip coincides with the signing of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership in Chile on March 8th.

Today delegates will meet in Japan with Federal Agriculture Minister, Lawrence MacAulay.

Japan is the second-biggest export market for Canadian pork.
