Bill C-49 Has Passed!

The long awaited Bill C-49 finally was passed yesterday.

On Tuesday, the House of Commons voted to send the Bill back to the Senate because they disagreed with the Senate's two amendments.

After Senate debate, they voted to pass it by sending it for Royal Assent.

Farmers were pushing to see the Bill passed before the summer break starting June 22nd, in order to hold the railways more accountable and to avoid another grain backlog like we saw this past winter.

Raising Beef to Help Babies

A 4-H Beef Club raised nearly $42,000 for their local hospital at their show and sale on Monday.

Like many clubs, every year the Longview 4-H Beef Club raises a steer and donates all the proceeds from the sale of the animal to a cause of their choice.

Over the past six years, the club has donated over $200,000 to the High River District Health Care Foundation.

This year's money will be going towards the hospital's maternity unit, where many of the Longview 4-H members were born.

Canola Seeding Tips

Canola seeding is progressing across Alberta.

Angela Brackenreed, Agronomist with the Canola Council of Canada, says she doesn't recommend seeding any deeper than one inch, as that would make the plant more vulnerable to seedling diseases and flea beetles.

Brackenreed reminds producers that they should be getting about three weeks of protection from their seed treatment insecticide.
