Stats Can Forecasting Record Corn Crop

Statistics Canada is predicting a record corn for grain crop this year.

The agency's model-based principal field crop estimates forecast record production of 14.5 million tonnes of corn for grain. Canola production is estimated to be 21.0 million tonnes in 2018, while soybean production is estimated to be 7.5 million tonnes.

Despite dry conditions earlier in the growing season, recent weather changes, particularly in the Prairies, have improved the overall conditions and the outlook on production is better than originally estimated in July.

Recognizing Hard Working People in the Dairy Industry

Nominations are open for two Alberta Milk awards.

Alberta Milk Communications Specialist, Karlee Conway, says the first award is the Dairy Industry Achievement Award, which they've been giving out since the 1940's.

"It is an award that recognizes leaders that contribute to the development of producer industry-wide policy or programs that really just advance the dairy industry somehow."

They're also giving out the Recognition of Service Award, which Conway says, is a newer award for people who don't qualify for the Achievement Award, but have done amazing things to move the industry forward.

New Loan Program May Be a Double Edged Sword for Young Farmers

The Bank of Montreal recently announced a new loan program for young Canadian farmers.

BMO wants to support farmers under the age of 35 who are already in the industry, or those looking to choose agriculture as a career path, by offering loans of up to $1 million.

Annessa Good from Cremona, Alberta is with GRS Consulting where she works in succession planning with her father Merle Good.

Good says, while this new access to cash flow is exciting, it may be too easy to get credit, which isn't only a problem for the agriculture industry.

However, Good says these loans provide the next generation with opportunities to grow the farm business through value added products and exploring niche markets.
