Weather Slows Harvest Progress

Alberta Ag and Forestry's latest Crop Report shows rain across all regions in Alberta slowed harvest progress last week.

Provincial harvest is roughly 10 per cent complete as compared to about 18 per cent completed at this time last year.

Pulse Growers Face Ongoing Challenges with Market Access to India

Canada’s pulse industry continues to work to address trade challenges with the largest market for the crops.

Executive Director of Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, Carl Potts, says import tariffs imposed by India on pulse imports are in response to an oversupply of pulses grown in that country, and will likely remain in place until India is back in a position where they will have to rely on imports again.

He adds, they are looking to have a solution to India’s fumigation provisions on pulse imports by the time the market opens back up.

 

Beef Industry Wants Preferential Access to Key Asian Markets

While NAFTA is taking centre stage in trade news, the Canadian Cattlemen's Association is also keeping a close eye on an agreement to access key Asian markets.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Transpacific Partnership needs three more countries to ratify the agreement before it comes into effect.

The Canadian Cattlemen's Association's Director of Government and International Relations, John Masswohl, says Canada along with Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Brunei are all on track to sign on in November or December.

Funding Announced for the Canola Industry

On Monday, Federal Agriculture Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, announced up to $12.1 million in funding to the Canola Council of Canada.

The money will go towards adapting food processing techniques, exploring uses for canola meal in livestock production, examining practices to optimize yields, and protecting crops from pests.
