On Friday, March 1, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry reported a third and fourth case of the porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus on separate Alberta hog operations.

Now the department along with Alberta Pork say the third case of the disease, which causes diarrhea and vomiting in pigs, was actually a false positive.

Alberta pork said on their website Monday, the investigative lab identified the virus in a sample, but the pigs at the formerly-suspected farm show no signs of illness.

The group says they can only confirm three cases in the province since it was discovered for the first time in Alberta back in January.

It adds a source of the virus hasn't been found yet, and any possible connection between the three outbreaks remains uncertain.

PED poses no risk to human health and pork products are still safe for consumption.
