Bayer's proposed takeover of Monsanto isn't going as smoothly as officials would like.

Last month European anti-trust regulators opened an in-depth investigation into the $66-billion (U.S.) deal, which is expected to last until early January.

The European Commission has "concerns that the proposed acquisition could reduce competition in a number of different markets resulting in higher prices, lower quality, less choice and less innovation."

The proposed acquisition of Monsanto (U.S.) by Bayer (Germany) would create the world's largest integrated pesticides and seeds company.

This follows recent mergers of Dow and DuPont and Syngenta and ChemChina.
