Local farmers gathered at Cattlemen's Corner in Nanton on Tuesday, February 19 for a Cattle Nutrition Talk.

Ridley Block Operations Director of Research and Nutrition Services, Mark Robbins, spoke at the event and says you want to have a good supplement for the cows before calving.

He explains supplementing cows with trace minerals and vitamins will build better colostrum for the calf.

"If a calf gets a shot of scours, or maybe they didn't get enough colostrum as they should have, or the quality of the colostrum wasn't as good as it could've been, that calf is going to be a little farther behind his contemporaries that got a good dose of colostrum."

Robbins says, shortages of protein in the cow can also cause weak calf syndrome.

He reminds producers Vitamin A will also help the cow shed the placenta.
