With more corn varieties becoming available, cattle producers are looking at grazing whole plant corn as a viable winter feeding option.

Dr. Bart Lardner from the Western Beef Development Centre, says it's a good option, but cautions producers about problems with ruminal acidosis or grain overload.

"It really is a crop that grows two and a half, three times, the bio mass that our small grain cereals do on less land. Another attraction may be this is a crop that actually exceeds the nutrient requirements of a beef cow in first, second trimester pregnancy. Some cases in our cold winter months, there may not be a need to add additional energy supplementation."

A free webinar on corn grazing management will take place on next Thursday, October 12. For more information, or to register, you can visit the Beef Cattle Research Council's website.
