Hot on the heels of comments from USA President Donald Trump, some of the best dairy cattle in Western Canada are gathering at Stampede Park at the annual Calgary Stampede Dairy Classic Championship Show.

But this has nothing to do with politics.

Nearly 50 Jersey cows and heifers and close to 100 Holsteins have settled into their stalls in the agriculture barn, with competition getting underway Friday morning.

Producers as young as 11 years of age will showcase their animals in 35 classes where they will be marked on their conformation and characteristics.

There are also four youth showmanship classes.

Dairy producers from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia will be competing.

Dairy cattle have been shown at Stampede Park since 1886.

It goes Friday and Saturday, April 21-22 in the historic Victoria Pavilion at Stampede Park.
