This is the first significant increase of young producers since 1991.The next generation of agriculture is stepping up. Younger operators and women are accounting for a larger share of agriculture producers.

The 2016 Census of Agriculture shows the share of women operators acting as the primary decision maker on the farm has increased to 40.2% in 2016. For every five male farm operators in Canada, there are two female operators.

A 2.8% increase of producers under the age of 35 has been seen in the province, but Alberta still has a lower percentage of young producers compared to Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

This was the first percentage increase in farm operators under the age of 35 since 1991.

The majority of farms in Canada classify as having both male and female operators.
