The final list of regions eligible for the 2016 Livestock Tax Deferral has been released.

The M.D. of Foothills, M.D. of Willow Creek, and M.D. of Pincher Creek are all eligible regions for the deferral.

The deferral is designed for producers who had to downsize their breeding herd due to feed shortages caused by a drought, but want to buy cattle back after the winter season.

Trevor Hadwen, Agri-Climate Specialist with Agriculture Canada, says regions on the 2016 list in Alberta have improved since they were put on the list.

"The Alberta regions that were announced in 2016, were put in place because of the really dry early spring period. Those conditions improved through the year,so producers may not need the program. Based on the conditions in the early spring, it was recommended we include those just incase producers had sold cattle during that spring period."

When submitting your 2016 income tax returns, you can request the deferral if you're eligible, or send an adjustment request directly to Canada Revenue Agency if you have already submitted your returns.

He adds, they have been looking into how they can help B.C. ranchers through the 2017 livestock tax deferral.
