Pulse Canada CEO Gordon Bacon says that wrong signals from pulse superpowers like India, could lead to Canadian farmers sharply reducing pulse plantings.

This could set "the stage for a potential shortage of pulses for the 2018-2019 crop year," he said.

Bacon was in India this week participating in a federal trade mission, while also trying to identify effective solutions to the current trade barriers with India.

One of those barriers includes India's decision to impose a 50 per cent import duty on peas. Issues surrounding pulse fumigation also need to be sorted out.

Bacon notes meetings between the two countries have been promising.
