Clayton Smith with Cattlemen's Corner in Nanton says, producers wanting to get their hands on vitamins A, D and E are looking at some steep prices.

A fire at a BASF's citral manufacturing plant last October in Germany is causing a short supply of these vitamins.

Smith says, many producers use injectable vitamins A and D for their calves this time of year.

"I haven't been able to get my hands on that for four months, so that is a big shot right there that we're loosing out on, and I'm trying to get it for people, but it's not looking very good."

There's a bit of concern regarding the vitamin shortage since vitamins A and D are so important for the cattle this time of year, Smith says.

"Just because of the weather of course, the cows are under stress. Coming around to calving time, cows got a lot of stress on them, and they just need to keep their body condition up. It always helps to have that boost in there, and of course, as soon as we start loosing that, we see the cow's condition go down."

He says, the plant is supposed to be up and running in March.
