The Western Winter Wheat Initiative is encouraging farmers to seed winter wheat this spring as a solution to unharvested acres from last year.

Getting a crop in the ground while combining crops from last year, left some producers with unseeded acres.

"Incorporating winter wheat into your cropping rotation is a risk management tool," says Janine Paly, WWWI agronomist for Alberta. "There is no doubt that seeding during harvest in September poses some challenges; however, acres seeded in August can ease the stress and intense workload producers experience in a wet spring."

The crop definitely requires some different planning, but winter wheat allows farmers to take advantage of a bad situation by getting a head start on the 2018 season.

It includes practices such as maintaining stubble, lining up seed early, and fertility management.

Paly adds, the optimum seeding window is between September 1st and 15th. She recommends seeding earlier than later, as farmers get busy with harvest during the seeding window.
