The countdown to the Alberta Summer Games has begun, with only one year till the opening ceremonies putting Okotoks and Black Diamond in the spotlight.

To celebrate and bring awareness to the 2023 event they are holding a showcase Saturday, July 23.

Chair of the Promotions Projects Committee Lee Kennedy says they will have a wide range of activities available for residents.

"So first and foremost I want to mention our sports, 'cause that's what this event is all about.

"The Summer Games is a sporting event, so there are 14 different sports that are going to be happening here next summer. We were able to get five of those sports to come out on Saturday. They're going to have tables set up with activities."

Sports on-site include lacrosse, softball, fastball, soccer and athletics.

Also at the event will be members of the Okotoks Optimist Club with activities, treats, face painting, cookies from 94 Take The Cake, beer gardens from HubTown Brewing, food trucks and a live DJ.

It will take place at Bill Roberson Park and will see local officials and celebrities take in the festivities.

"RJ Sigurdson is going to be there. He's our Highwood MLA. The distinguished John Barlow of Federal government fame will be there. Brent Robinson to speak on behalf of the town of Okotoks ... and of course, the ever famous Sandy Kennedy will be there speaking on behalf of the Summer Games."

It also doubles as a way to bring in volunteers and corporate support.

"It is a massive undertaking, and we need all the help we can get. So if there are any local companies or businesses that want to get involved, we are definitely looking for sponsorship donations. We've got a few people on board already, which we're excited for.

"We're around 200 volunteers already at this point ... by the time the actual games roll around, the number of volunteers we're looking for is about 1500. They don't need to jump on board right this minute. We are taking new people at any time. We're happy to have help."

Operating merchandise tables, cooks, and transportation are a few of the opportunities available to volunteers.

The kickoff event is taking place on Saturday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bill Roberson Park.

The games will run from July 20 to 23, 2023. For more information find the Alberta Summer Games on social media.
