An avalanche claimed the life of an Alberta man on the weekend.

It happened in the back country in southern Alberta between Carbondale and Castle Mountain Ski Resort near Pincher Creek.

RCMP in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass were alerted to the avalanche just before 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24.

A further investigation revealed that at approximately 1 p.m. that afternoon two adults with two children were snowmobiling when the avalanche occurred.

One of the adult men was able to escape with both children however the second man was buried by the avalanche.

Yesterday, on Sunday Feb. 25 Pincher Creek RCMP along with the Southwestern Alberta Regional Search Rescue, a K9 and handler from Fernie Search and Rescue and Alberta Conservation were able to recover the body of the man that was buried by the avalanche.

They recovered the body of a 46-year-old from Magrath just after 1 p.m. and he was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
