The Town of Okotoks is bringing back a popular Christmas event.

Saturday (Nov. 26) they're hosting a Christmas Décor Swap at the Environmental Education Centre.

It's their final Green Living event of the year, and a return to an event the town had to drop during the pandemic.

They held Halloween and Christmas décor swaps in 2019, and Environment and Sustainability Coordinator Jinny Toffelmire says those were pretty successful.

"The last Christmas décor swap we had was pretty fun, there were a lot of great things that people dropped off and got to take some. We found that a lot of newcomer families that were new to the country didn't have any Christmas decorations and wanted to participate in the holiday season and were able to come away with tons of great stuff for decorating their homes."

People are invited to bring along gently used items in the morning and to return in the afternoon to take a look at some new decorations they may want to add to their collection.

Toffelmire says donations must be in reasonable condition.

"We want people to think 'would I want to put this up in my house?' So, they need to be items that are in really good working condition, make sure all the pieces are there. We want these things to be something someone would want to take home."

Additionally, she says the "swap" aspect isn't a hard and fast rule.

"If you just want to donate a few things, that's totally fine, and you don't have to bring something in order to take anything. We're just there to make sure that things aren't getting thrown into the landfill, and we all need a little bit of a refresher with some of our decorations. This is a really easy way to refresh your holiday decorations and pay it forward."

It's happening at the Environmental Education Centre (1118 North Railway Street,) and donations can be dropped off between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.

The swap will happen between 12 and 4 p.m.

They're also accepting donations for the Okotoks Food Bank.
