The Okotoks Fire Department rescued a girl from an island on the Sheep River.

On Thursday night (June 3) at around 6:30 p.m., both fire stations responded to a 9-1-1 call for help.

Firefighter Ryan Kaiser told Sun Country a girl was trapped on an island surrounded by swift currents.

A rescue team on the north side of the river was able to rescue the stranded youth.

"It took a little bit but we did find her and managed to coordinate our resources to get her off the island safely," said Kaiser.

To Kaiser's knowledge, this was the first river rescue of the spring.

"Try to be safe when you're on the river. Beware that it [the current] can change," he concluded.

The girl's age or any further details were not provided.
