Glyphosate-resistant Kochia is spreading across western Canada.

It was first confirmed on 11 fields in Alberta in 2011. In 2012, it was documented on nine fields in Alberta and 10 in Saskatchewan.

Eric Johnson, weed biologist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, says it was just a matter of time before it spread.

"The probably of glyphosate-resistant kochia in Saskatchewan is very high right now," he says.

He says it is likely spreading quickly by winds that move the tumbling weed and scatter seed.

All kochia in western Canada is already considered to be Group 2 resistant, meaning producers are encouraged to use a rotation of control products that don't have active ingredients in groups 2 or 9.

A formal survey for glyphosate-resistant kochia in Manitoba and Saskatchewan is planned for 2013.
