The High River Fire Department has been responding to more calls involving propane tank leaks and is reminding residents of the importance of propane tank safety.

Captain Rodney Keller says it's a common thing as BBQ season returns.

"We generally run into this problem around the same time every year as propane tanks might get old or something is caught in a relief valve or they were over filled when and then stored so when they heat up it increase pressure and activates the pressure relief valve."

He says to remember to make sure your BBQ's are a safe distance from your house if possible and that the propane tank is shut off when the BBQ is not in use.

He says there are some things to remember if you're faced with a fire in your BBQ.

"Close the lid and call 911. It will go out but we need to monitor it."
