K-Country logging brings concerns from climate group

The Calgary Climate Hub has taken its concerns about logging in K-Country to Foothills County.

The climate advocacy group outlined its concerns in a letter to council.

They're looking for support for an immediate pause in Spray Lake Sawmills plan to log 1,100 hectares in the Upper Highwood.

They say the logging puts the source of water for all communities in the Highwood watershed at risk.

Reeve Delilah Miller, at the November 1st council meeting, acknowledged their concerns but considers the logging to be beneficial considering the potential devastation from a forest fire is of much greater risk.

She says a fire in that area would be far more invasive on rivers and streams.

Councillor Suzanne Oel pointed out the Forest Management Plan does include a buffer between the area being logged and waterways.

Council acknowledged receipt of the group's letter but took no further action.
