September 23, 2016

On the evening of September 23, 2016, Helen Lawrence passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta as a result of complications following surgery. Helen was 73 years old.

Helen Jean Lawrence (Yura) was born May 18, 1943 in High River, Alberta, to Steve and Karolina Yura. She was the apple of her father’s eye and the baby of the family. Helen went to high school in High River and then went on to continue her education at Henderson’s Business College in Calgary. She met the love of her life, Bruce Lawrence in High River and they were married December 5, 1964. Bruce was proud of the fact that when most people were intimidated to ask out the pretty girl, he found it a challenge that he was willing to undertake. Bruce and Helen were married for 52 years and were truly each other’s best friends.

In 1966 Helen was excited to become a mother for the first time to her daughter Angela and then nine months later to a second daughter, Karen. Helen was proud of her girls and often dressed them as twins, since they were so close in age.

Helen worked mostly in government positions and realized a dream of hers when she joined the RCMP in 1977 to the extreme pride of her husband and daughters. Helen was proud to serve with the RCMP in Calgary, Alberta and did so for many years. Helen was fearless and wore her badge with honor. After retiring from the RCMP, Helen worked side by side with her husband Bruce in their business Eamor’s Saddlery in High River. Helen and Bruce retired together in 2000, and remained inseparable. They enjoyed travelling, taking cooking classes and weekly lunches with friends.

Helen is survived by her husband Bruce, her daughter Angela and Angela’s husband David Tremaine; her daughter Karen and Karen’s husband William (Bill) Stevenson; her granddaughters Brooklyn and Corey-Dale Stevenson, her sister Anne Gau (Dan) of Edmonton and numerous nieces and nephews.

At Helen’s request an intimate graveside memorial will take place later this week.   In lieu of flowers, enjoy every minute of your time with family. Life is too short. Helen would have wanted that.
