Doug Irvine opened the World Pro Chuckwagon Association season with a win at the Grande Prairie Stompede on the weekend.

He beat Kirk Sutherland by just 5/100ths of a second in the $35,000 dash.

"I thought if I could get them to the head of the lane there that I'd get them because it gets a little heavier coming into the infield and so I was just trying to keep them pinned down there as long as I could and then there's a hard spot that I found the other night about two wide, so when I hit the homestretch, hit that, I kind of started going again so then I knew I kind of had them there," Irvine says.

High River drivers Jason Glass was 17th and Jordie Fike was 22nd.

Okotoks area drivers Mark Sutherland was 29th and Dayton Sutherland was 40th.

The chucks will run in High River from July 21 to 24.
