Some locals in the area are getting a real treat in their own backyards.

HBO's production of the TV show The Last of Us is underway in Okotoks, and some of the residents are getting a bit of a sneak peek into the filming process.

Michelle Traxel, a local business owner living in the area where they're shooting, says it's been a really cool experience for her children.

"My kids are like, 'I think I want to be in the movies.' And they're really loving watching the intricacy of setting up.

"We got to watch them run all the power supplies, and trying to move huge trucks in these really, kind of tight areas, and setting up different screens and different blocks. And so they were building stuff behind our house and then moving stuff in front of our house. So it was just this really cool thing that my kids got to watch."

Several large trucks and trailers are lining Robinson Drive and are spilling out into Milligan.

Minor traffic disruptions are expected with the westbound side of Milligan Drive being reduced to one lane near Veterans Way.

Traffic isn't the only thing being affected though.

Traxel particularly pointed out how it's been good for boosting business in the area with people from the crew checking out her restaurant Little Fast + Fresh and doing some shopping in town.

She says it's such a positive thing for Okotoks and that she'd love to see more of it.

"When we lived in Vancouver, we lived in downtown, so there was kind of constantly filming, and it was normalcy that you would accidentally walk through a movie set. But it's really cool to see something that was so intrinsic to big city life for us, come to our little old neighbourhood."

Traxel also mentioned how they're actually having to bring in snow for the filming since so much of it has melted away.

Filming should be continuing through the week with cleanup expected for early next week.

The Town of Okotoks advises watching for crews and equipment and to be cautious while driving in the area.
