A new policy for roadside memorials is now in place for the M.D. Of Foothills

Council passed the policy on Wednesday and Reeve Larry Spilak says it is important for the M.D. to have its own set of guidelines, rather than just the provincial policy.

"There are some guidelines in place as to how [people] would go about doing it rather than placing it wherever they may feel is necessary," says Spilak.

"It is jot a big issue in our M.D. We don't have many and we don't anticipate that many but we figured it was a good idea to have a policy in place anyway."

The policy includes the following guidelines:

- Roadside memorial markers must not constitute a safety hazard to those using or maintaining a roadway.
- The sole authority to permit a memorial marker resides with administration
- If administration determines that it is absolutely necessary to remove a memorial marker for safety, construction or maintenance purposes, the individuals who erected the memorial must facilitate its removal or relocation to a suitable location
- A period of a maximum of 12 months will be applied for temporary marker sites.
