Okotoks is getting a little greener, and a little quieter, with the help of an all-new electric mower.

The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) has a grant program designed to help municipalities across Alberta lower energy costs & reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the help of this grant, the Town’s parks team has added a fully electric Greenworks ride-on lawn mower to their fleet.

“The grant will refund 30% of the pre-tax purchase price, which makes it comparable in price to a gas powered mower”, said parks manager Christa Michailuck. “The lawn mower is so much quieter to operate than a gas mower and is more environmentally friendly, which aligns with our sustainable corporate initiatives.”

Purchasing low-emissions vehicles and equipment for the Town’s fleet is one of the strategies in Okotoks’ Climate Action Plan.

“Not only does the new mower reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions by about 50% compared to its gasoline-powered equivalent, but incorporating electric vehicles into the Town’s fleet as grant opportunities like this arise, also helps normalize electric vehicle use in the larger community,” added Michailuck.
