A 47-year-old man from Okotoks was killed Sunday morning when his pickup was struck by a train at a level crossing.

Sergeant Jason Cann says the collision happened about 9:15 at the intersection of 176th Street East and 458th Avenue East near Mazeppa.

He says there are no signals at the intersection and the engineer sounded his horn and tried to stop but wasn't able to.

The train was eastbound while the pickup was southbound at the time.

There was snow and ice on the road and weather conditions were described as poor.

Sergeant Cann says Mounties hope to go over video from the train while the accident is still under investigation.
