A walkout by students at Okotoks' Foothills Composite high school last week was no surprise to the division's administration.

Superintendent Chris Fuzessy says they were made aware of it beforehand and were in support.

"We were proud to see our students engaging as stakeholders in their education, our students want to be heard about how their school environment is cultivated and we certainly respect that voice."

Participants called for a wide number of changes including improved supports for mental health and sexual assault survivors, more severe consequences for sexual harassment, as well as revisions to sexual education to focus more on consent and LGBTQ issues.

A meeting was held with an organizer of the walkout to make sure it was done safely.

Fuzessy says what matters to the students matters to the division.
