Like every other charitable society, 2020 was a challenging year for High River's Sheppard Family Park.

The new president of the group, Carol Knox says they weren't able to hold the Heritage Day festivities or the Threshing Bee last year.

But she says there were bright spots.

"We also rent out the barn and the grounds for weddings and family reunions and such and we were able to occasionally rent them out for smaller gatherings if they met the government regulations with COVID so that definitely impacted the park," she says. "But in terms of people still being able to wander the grounds of the park, that's something that people can do any day, so that was still available and we still had our Community Garden, so 32 families were still able to do that so that was good."

Knox says there are a few very beautiful flower beds at the park including one that Ruth McCoy, who donated the park to the town, had tended around her home.

She says that has been faithfully restored and will be looked after again this year.

Knox says a lot of people had picnics and campfires or just enjoyed the grounds on their own.

She says volunteers are always welcome.

You can call the park at 403-652-6075 or if you'd like to get on the waiting list for a plot in the Community Garden call 403-601-4266.
