Okotoks town council has decided on the location of the new skate park.

Funding for the project was approved as part of the  2023 multi-year capital budget, and the location of the park was voted on at their Sept. 11 meeting.

A few locations were considered and presented to council by town administration.

Options included Cimarron Park, Bill Robertson Park, and Tillotson Park, with each option given a red, yellow, or green rating based on their benefits and potential issues.

Council voted in favour of Howard Park, the only park given a green rating in the report.

Among its benefits are the location's proximity to the Foothills Composite high school, the fact that the land is already zoned for recreation, and existing public restrooms.

The skate park would replace the existing play structure, described in the report as "at end of life."

The project is set to enter the design phase in 2024, with construction to commence in 2025.

Opportunities to provide feedback will come during the design process.

The Okotoks Fall Freestyle Competition is being held tomorrow at the town's existing skate park.
