Southern Albertans will want to keep their eyes on the skies tonight.

Solar storms that will be erupting this weekend are expected to make the northern lights visible from much farther south than usual.

Earlier this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G4 Geomagnetic Watch, a rare occurrence that was last seen in 2005.

This evening, they announced via X that G5 conditions had been observed (G5 being the highest level of geomagnetic storm.)

Under these conditions, the northern lights could be visible from as far south as California.

As long as the clouds don't obscure the view, Foothills residents could be in for a beautiful night.
