We're heading into the third week of July, which is National Drowning Prevention Week.

The Town of Okotoks is advising residents to stay water smart, and to take proper precautions to prevent water related deaths or injuries.

Those participating in leisure activities on the water are encouraged to make use of life jackets, pay attention to others in the water, and to avoid to stay sober when in or around large bodies of water.

Storm ponds are dangerous year round, with thick mud presenting the danger of residents or pets getting stuck, and poor water quality posing a health risk.

The Sheep River can also present significant danger to members of the public. cold water, turbulent currents, and debris from rocks and trees are all factors that can lead to serious injury or drowning.

Approximately 500 deaths per year occur due to preventable water related incidents.
