Lorraine Stumpf, of Milo, passed away at the Calgary South Health
Campus on Sunday, July 30, 2017 at the age of 88 years.

Lorraine was born in the Arrowwood Hospital on February 3, 1929 to John
Robert and Annie Goldthorpe, who were English homesteaders in the
Eastway district. Lorraine was the youngest of six children and attended
Eastway and Buffalo Schools. They milked 14 cows before heading to
school by horseback. Mom had a unique style of milking - thumbs turned
inward. One of her favorite teachers was Nancy (Holoboff) Kingsmith.
They had a typical homesteader’s childhood and she often relayed stories
of the “toys” Merv fashioned for them. When playing with Mary and a
quarrel arose, it was resolved by humming a particular tune, then they
made up and resumed playing. As she grew older, she worked in the fields
with Merv and their Dad, tramping hay on the rack, stooking grain and
pitching the bundles at harvest, tending to livestock and the garden.

On July 6, 1949, she married Kenneth Stumpf and they began their life
together on the homestead in the Buffalo Hills. Never to stray far from
their roots, they settled in Milo in the early 50's. Their first home
was purchased from Lloyd Hughes, then sold to Sam Gailey and they
purchased the neighboring house from Smokey Jones. In 1965, they built a
new home where Mom resided until a decline in her health forced her to
move in with Letty Lynn In September of 2016.

In 1968, Lorraine began driving school bus for the County of Vulcan,
retiring after 27 years. Her community spirit was shown by her work with
the Lutheran Church Women, the Milo Ice Association, Milo Hall Board and
her participation in the Terry Fox Runs. She was also a member of the
Snake Valley Drop In Centre.

Lorraine also had a great love of animals, especially dogs and horses.
She loved the years spent watching her boys play hockey and in the days
of the outdoor rink, she could always be relied upon to help shovel snow
to clear the ice surface. She liked crocheting, knitting, doing jigsaw
puzzles and baking. Her pie pastry so flaky and the Angel Food cakes and
cream puffs so tender.

Special memories were made on Sunday picnics, skidoo, Halloween and
card parties, and camping trips with family and friends. Without mentioning
names, you know who you are!

Lorraine is survived by her son Doug (Teresa) Stumpf of Houston, B.C.,
daughter Letty Lynn Stumpf and daughter-in-law Rhena Oake, both of
Calgary, two grandsons - Ryan (Carrie) and Clark (Candis), four great
grandchildren - Reid and Carson, Cassidy and Sophia, all of Houston,
B.C., sister Mary Hoffman of Vegreville, brother Mervin (Frances)
Goldthorpe of High River and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also
survived by her in-laws - Estelle Stumpf, Kay Fitzpatrick, Betty Lahd,
Elaine Peterson and Charlie Campbell, Elva (Gordon) Gore, Leroy (Heidi)
Peterson and Len (Ciska) Peterson. She was predeceased by her parents,
husband Kenneth, son Robert “Bob”, sisters Harriet (Len) White, Edith
(Archie) Garriock, brother Hirst (Ivy) Goldthorpe and brothers-in-law
