A Turner Valley resident is the recipient of a very prestigious award given out Tuesday, July 23.

The Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal is given out to young Canadians who've made outstanding contributions to their communities or to Canada as a whole.

Turner Valley's Hope Roberts says it was her charitable work and event organization in high school that got her nominated.

"So I was heavily involved in the student union at my school. Which included multiple fundraiser's such as a Humboldt Bronco's fundraiser, a fundraiser for the Fort McMurray wildfire, and a lot of school activities that promoted engagement and inclusivity in my school community."

Roberts says it was a great honour to receive the award.

"It's an immense honour, I am greatly appreciative of receiving this award. I know it's a very big deal, and I am very gracious towards my family and school and everybody who supported me in winning this award."

Roberts says she's got a lot on her plate heading into the future.

"I'm currently studying at the Schulich School Of Engineering, pursuing a degree in civil engineering at the University Of Calgary, and I'm involved in initiatives that promote diversity in STEM, mostly promoting girls in rural communities to pursue STEM degrees like myself. I'm also headed to Guatemala in a month to volunteer at elementary schools."
