Some local kids are learning about verbal abuse at school, so they can avoid it at home. This month, the Eagle Women's Emergency Shelter is presenting it's "words are not for hurting" campaign so kids understand the pain it can cause.
Shelter Executive Director John Dray says it's the first step in preventing domestic violence when the kids grow up.
Unfortunately, Dray says, the extent of the damage from verbal abuse at home is quite often never known.
The annual outreach program is part of family violence prevention month in Alberta, and will visit every public elementary in the foothills by December.
