It was a day to inspire a new generation of football players for the Highwood high school Saturday, July 14.

Despite the chilly morning air, former Highwood Mustang star, Troy Kowal and a group of his fellow teammates teamed up to introduce the sport of football to a group of 16 youngsters aged 10 to 12.

Kowal says football inspired him throughout high school.

"It's a great sport, I feel like it pushed me to do better and to put effort into it, and all things in life."

Kowal now plays offensive line for the Minot State University Beavers in North Dakota.

For the second year in a row,  Highwood High School won't field a team because of a lack of players.

Kowal says he's looking to change the future for the Mustangs.

"University football has a lot of local spirit which really tunes people into the game, I'm hoping to bring some of that back to my hometown."

Kowal and his former teammates let the kids try both offensive and defensive drills, so the youngsters could find out what they liked best.

The event was completely free to attend, and Kowal is hoping to run his summer camp annually, moving forward.
