The season came to an end over the weekend for the Highwood Mustangs Varsity girls basketball team.

They fell 47-45 to Brooks in zone finals, and Coach Ryan Hayden says he was pretty proud of his grade 10 and 11 players who stepped up when they were called on.

"They got a ton of minutes and especially on the defensive end of the floor really helped. I was super impressed with them. Our seniors certainly didn't get a whole lot of opportunity to rest and there were a couple of stretches where the legs were definitely a little tired."

Hayden says they'd hoped to make Provincials, but overall the team had a heck of a season.

"Probably a little bit of disappointment for sure. But I think that as the days go on they'll recognize the outstanding season that they had. And if nothing else we're going to hang a league (championship) banner, that's super important for our program."

He says he's expecting to compete for a shot at Provincials again next season.
