Okotoks Mark Sutherland is 0-for-2 at the Stampede when it comes to Rangeland Derby finals.

He finished third this time out, and says this year's final was a bit frustrating.

"It was unfortunate, I couldn't let the horses run on the final night, there was a little bit of interference in the race. And it wasn't malicious, it's just, these situations happen. Everything came out healthy, we couldn't just let them go. You know that's the one regret, we weren't able to just let them blow off the steam and go as fast as we possibly could and give Kurt a real run for his money."

That being said, Sutherland says Kurt Bensmiller was full value for his win.

Despite falling short, Sutherland says he's keeping it in perspective.

He says anyone who's followed the chucks over the years would recognize the name of every driver in that final.

Bensmiller, Vigen, Sutherland and Glass.

All the sons of former famous chuckwagon drivers.

"It's a great honour to be in the dash again. And you probably could have looked back 27 years ago and you'd see those same names in a dash somewhere. They'd either just be our dad's or our grandpa's depending on which generation you are."

Sutherland and the rest of the drivers are back to work in Strathmore starting Friday, August 3, for the Heritage Days Stampede.
