The project to complete a segment of the Happy Trails near the newly developed retail centre close to Highwood high school and Canadian Tire in High River is nearing its final stages of construction.

Engineering Inspector with the town of High River, Alexa Levair said in early August, that the completion of this project is a huge stride towards improving the ability to walk around the town.

"This marks an important milestone in our community for moving High River forward as a walkable community. With the completion of this section, residents will be able to walk, bike, in-line skate, whatever alternate mode of transportation they prefer, to the stores, businesses, parks, school and homes located on the south side of 12th Avenue.”

The project met a few hitches along the way, which impeded its progress and delayed the originally planned completion goal for the beginning of the 2018 school year.

A period of rain at the tail end of summer prevented crews from paving at the end of August, snow further foiled development in October and a budgetary cut in town council on August 13, limited the amount of money that could be spent on landscaping.

The new pathway is awaiting some final landscaping touches, hydro seeding and line painting set for completion on November 2.
