The province is growing but the supply of phone numbers isn't.

That's why Liz Sauve with Telus says starting in April there's going to be a change.

"Starting April 9, Alberta is getting a new area code and that is 825, and this is in response to a number of contributing factors including the fact that most families these days, if you think about it, they have half a dozen, maybe more, phone numbers to their name," she says.

Sauve says there are other devices like apps that allow the user to make phone calls that have a number associated with them which is contributing to the limit on new phone numbers as well as Internet sticks that allow the user to stay connected wherever they are that also have their own number.

Sauve says there's still some flexibility and customers can make requests.

"If you're looking to be the first people with-in your group of friends or family that get this new 825 number, we're certainly going to do our best to make that available to you," Sauve says. "And it goes the same way if after April 9, if you're looking to get a different phone number but you'd prefer one of the codes that are currently in market right now, we'll do our best to find one and make that work for you."

Businesses are encouraged to consider whether any changes will be required to their phone equipment. Businesses that restrict long distance calls will need to reprogram their equipment to accept the 825 area code as local. Residential customers won't have to make any changes.
