The Town of High River is taking steps to make sure everyone eligible has a chance to vote in the upcoming October municipal election.

The Manager of Legislative Services, Kara Rusk, says the new by-law takes the place of 56 outdated, separate pieces of legislation and puts them into a comprehensive package.

She says it allows electors to request a special ballot if they are going to be away or can't vote either election day or at an advance poll..

"It also allows for incapacitated electors who may not be able to physically access a voting station, so if they cannot leave their home, we will actually  send two deputy returning officers to their home to take their vote," she says.

The new by-law will allow automated voting machines to be used, as they were during last fall's by-election. But Rusk says on-line voting isn't in the cards right now.

"The current provincial legislation doesn't actually allow for that, we are hopeful that moving forward the government will build in those changes into its legislation moving forward," Rusk says.

Council has also authorized that polling stations be set up at the High River Hospital, Sunrise Village and Medicine Tree Manor.
