The Town of High River is moving ahead with a new concept in playgrounds.

They're turning Birchwood Park behind Sobey's into a natural playground.

Birchwood Park, we felt, is a really good location, they've been without a playground since 2013," Kim Unger, Parks mediation and recovery lead for the Town says. "We're really excited because natural playgrounds are fairly new, they have them in Canmore and Banff and we thought this would be a great idea, a great thing to bring to town. We thought it was something different and we think it'll get a lot of use,"

Unger, says it allows for less structured play.

"We'll have a slide there," Unger says. "There are going to be some items called wacky posts which little kids can run in and out of. I think the biggest part of a natural playground is that it lends itself to exploratory play and physical play and it's really creative and requires a lot of social interaction and it's supposed assist with reconnecting kids to nature."

When it's complete it have something for kids of all ages.

The work gets underway this week and should be completed by mid-November.

This project has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Calgary Foundation.
